History
of VINCI
Timeless foundations
The history of the VINCI Group dates back to the late 19th century and is built on the activities and experience of two companies. In 1890, Grands Travaux de Marseille (GTM) was founded to build and operate the sewage system in Marseille. Then, in 1899, two outstanding engineers from the Polytechnique – the elite French engineering school – Alexandre Giros and Louis Loucheur founded Société Générale d’Entreprises (SGE).
In 2000, these two companies became the foundation of the VINCI Group, one of the world’s largest organisations operating in the construction and infrastructure sector.

As it delivers projects of public utility, VINCI regards dialogue with public and private partners as a fundamental condition of its business and publishes a new Manifesto setting out commitments that reflect this mission.

Roots that inspire
The name VINCI pays tribute to the universal genius of Leonardo da VINCI – artist, scientist and engineer. It stands for humanism, inventiveness and technical ingenuity – qualities the Group’s employees identify with. The reference to the name of the master Leonardo da VINCI also reflects the Group’s European roots.
The logo is also an important part of the Group’s identity. It is made up of “cramps” – metal elements used by cathedral builders to join stones together. They symbolise sustainable construction designed to last, while their contemporary look also suggests links with the world of networks and information technology, as well as the interconnection of the Group’s expertise.
