Where does this tradition come from?

The topping-out wreath (“wiecha”) is one of the best-known building customs today. It is a wreath of branches or flowers hung up to mark the completion of an important stage of construction. In the past, such wreaths were offerings to deities or spirits, and they also symbolised the unbreakable bond between people and nature.
